Driving in Europe

For Irish motorists , driving on the continent offers a different experience to driving at home. Most countries in Europe drive on the right hand side of the road while speed limits, road signs and traffic laws vary from country to country. Familiarise yourself with European Regulations as well as the rules of the road in the country of your choice. Note that some countries you visit make require you to have an International Driving Permit.

European Regulations

Documents and Insurance

You must always carry your national driving licence (and International Driving Permit if necessary), the original vehicle registration document and your passport.  If the registration document is not in your name, ask the registered keeper to provide you with a letter of authority. If the vehicle is hired or leased ask the hire company to supply you with a Vehicle or Hire Certificate. You also need to advise your motor insurer or broker of your intentions before taking a vehicle abroad. It is most important that you know the level of cover you will actually have and what documents you will need to prove it.  A Green Card is compulsory in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Turkey.

Keep your passports and licences in a folder , along with your tickets and car, travel and health insurance policies and vehicle registration document (or, in the case of a company car, a letter of authority). Photocopy everything and keep the copies with you somewhere safe.

Driving Fines

Many countries impose on -the-spot fines for minor traffic offences and fines are paid in the currency of the country concerned to the police of local post office against a ticket issued. If you are fined, always ask for an official receipt for proof of payment, even if you dispute the fine it may still need to be paid or surety offered.  If you drink - don't drive. The laws are strict and the penalties severe.

Nationality Plate

Vehicles must display a nationality plate of the approved pattern , design and size.

Seat Belts

If seat belts are fitted to your vehicle it is compulsory to wear them .

Crash or Safety Helmets

The wearing of crash or safety helmets by motorcyclists and their passengers is compulsory in all countries .

Headlamp Beam Adapters

These are a must when motoring abroad in continental Europe . Unadjusted headlights, when driving on the right, will dazzle oncoming motorists, which is an offence and can lead to accidents. Before driving on the Continent always ensure your vehicle is fit for the road by fitting headlamp beam converters. This is a legal requirement in most Continental European countries.

Passengers & Children - Children under 3 must not travel in front unless using a suitable restraint system. Children over 3 and under 12 must not travel in front or rear seats unless using seat belts or restraint system appropriate to the size and weight of the child.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: 18 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50 kph, outside built up areas = 90kph, motorways = 120 kph. Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Additional Information - Traffic on roundabouts must give way to traffic from the right, unless otherwise indicated by road signs. Warning triangle compulsory.

Driving in Belgium

Driving in Bulgaria

Lights - Dipped headlights should be used during poor day time visibility. Motorcyclists must use dipped headlights during the day in built up areas and towns. You must carry a replacement set of vehicle bulbs compulsory.

Passengers & Children - Children under 12 must not travel in the front seats.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length15 metres.

Driving in Czech Republic

Lights - All motorists and motorcyclists must use dipped headlights during the day.

Passengers & Children - Children under 3 travelling as front or rear passengers must be secured in a child restraint system appropriate to size: over 3, they may use seat belts combined with booster cushion if appropriate.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 18.5 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 80kph, motorways = 110 kph. Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Additional Information - Fire extinguisher and first aid kit recommended: warning triangle compulsory. Leaded petrol not available - unleaded super (98 octane) contains lead substitute additive.

Driving in Finland

Driving Requirements - Minimum Age 18 for Irish licence holders driving temporarily imported vehicles.

Blood Alcohol Limits for Drivers - 0.5 mg/litre

Lights - All motorists and motorcyclists must use dipped headlights outside built-up areas during the day.

Passengers & Children - Any person under 1.5 metres in height must not travel in front seat unless using a suitable restraint system.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4.2 metres, width 2.6 metres, length 12 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 18.75 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 90kph, motorways = 130 kph.  Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Additional Information -
Beware of game (elk, reindeer etc.) which pose a very real hazard on some roads. Warning triangle compulsory. Leaded petrol not available - unleaded (99 octane) contains lead substitute additive. Winter tires compulsory between December & February.

Driving in France

Accidents & Emergencies - Fire 18 Police 17 Ambulance 15. European emergency call number is also in use - dial 112 & request service required.

Driving Requirements - Minimum age 18 licence holders driving temporarily cars (or motorcycles over 80cc). Visiting motorists who have held a driving licence for less than two years must adhere to the wet weather speed limit (see speed limits).

Blood Alcohol Limits for Drivers - 0.25 mg/litre

Lights - Driving on sidelights only is prohibited. Motorcyclists using machines over 125cc must use dipped headlights during the day. Replacement set of vehicle bulbs strongly recommended.

Services - It is usually possible to obtain 24-hour service for a car and /or occupants every 40 kilometres. Rest stops, most of which have toilet facilities can be found every 15 kilometres. Free emergency telephones are sited every 2km on most motorways. Public telephones are available at rest stops, service areas and toll booths.

Passengers & Children - Children under 10 must not travel in the front with the exception of babies up to 9 months and less than 9kg in rear facing restraint system appropriate to age and weight. Note: under no circumstances should a rear facing restraint be used in a front seat with an air bag.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length18.35 metres.

Driving in Germany

Driving in Greece

Lights - All motorists (outside built-up areas) and motor cycles must use dipped headlights during the day.

Passengers & Children - Children under 1.5 metres in height using suitable restraint system permitted to travel in the front seat provided there is no airbag for that seat.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 3 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 18 metres.

Driving in Italy

Driving Requirements - Minimum age 18 for Irish licence holders driving temporarily imported cars (or motorcycles over 125cc or with passenger). Italian translation or 'declaration' formerly issued to accompany all older green licences no longer valid. The holder of such a licence should exchange it for a new format licence if time allows. Alternatively these older licences may be accompanied by an International Driving Permit (LDP).

Blood Alcohol Limits for Drivers - 0.4 mg/litre

Lights - Dipped headlights are compulsory when passing through tunnels (even if they are well lit). Full beam headlights can only be used outside cities and towns. Replacement set of vehicle bulbs recommended.

Services - It is usually possible to obtain services for a car and/or occupants every 30 - 50 kilometres. Emergency telephones are sited every 2km on most motorways. Some are marked SOS and have automatic push-button controls to summon medical help.

Passengers & Children - Children under 4 must not travel in the front or rear seats unless using a suitable restraint system. Children between 4 and 12 may only travel in front seat if using such equipment.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.55 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 18.75 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 90kph, motorways = 130 kph. Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Additional Information - Italian Embassy, 63 Northumberland Road, Dublin 4.Vehicles travelling in opposite directions and wishing to turn left must pass in front of each other. Motorcycles under 150cc are not allowed on motorways. Warning triangle compulsory.

Driving in Luxembourg

Blood Alcohol Limits for Drivers - 0.4 mg/litre

Lights - When overtaking at night outside built-up areas you must flash lights. Parking lights are required in areas without street lights. Motorcyclists must use dipped headlights during the day.

Passengers & Children - Children under 12 and/or 1.5 metres in height must not travel in the front seat unless using a suitable restraint system. Children seated in the rear must use child seat or restraint if fitted.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 25 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 90kph, motorways = 120 kph, Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle with/without trailer.

Driving in Netherlands

Lights - Driving on sidelights only is prohibited. Undipped headlights cannot be used during the day and when their use inconveniences other traffic or pedestrians.

Passengers & Children - Children under 12 and/or 1.5 metres in height must not travel in the front seat unless using suitable restraint system. Children under 3 seated in the rear do not have to wear seat belts but must use child seat or restraint if fitted. Children over 3 and under 12 must wear seat belts in absence of such equipment.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.55 metres. Small roads have a maximum width restriction of 2.20 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 18 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 80kph, motorways = 120 kph, Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Driving Requirements - An international Driving Permit (IDP) is compulsory for the holder of any type of Irish driving licence.

Lights - Dipped headlights compulsory during the day for motorcyclists and between October and February for motorists. Replacement set of vehicle bulbs recommended.

Passengers & Children - Children under 10 must not travel in the front or rear unless using child restraint system appropriate to size and weight.

Size Restrictions - Motor vehicles: height 4 metres, width 2.5 metres. Vehicle & trailer: length 18.35 metres.

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 90kph, motorways = 130 kph. Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Additional Information - Fire extinguisher, first aid kit and warning triangle strongly recommended, as you may encounter problems with the local authorities if you are unable to produce such items when asked.

Driving in Portugal

Driving in Sweden

Speed Limits - Built up areas = 50kph, outside built up areas = 70kph, motorways = 110 kph. Type of vehicle affected = private vehicle without trailer.

Driving in Switzerland

Passengers & Children - Children under 7 cannot travel as front seat passengers unless using suitable restraint system. Children between 7 and 12 must use seat belts or restraint systems appropriate to size when travelling as front or rear passengers.
